Update: Jody Smith, the 2nd GA police officer in the shooting, has died.officer-jody-smith-murdered-400x250

An intense manhunt

A reward of $20,000 was originally set, but quickly moved to $70,000 for the capture of the suspect, the offer of which came from numerous law enforcement agencies and the city of Americus in a desperate measure to get him off the street.

The manhunt ensued after two officers responded to a domestic disturbance, as we previously reported. Reporters on scene were quick to tweet what was happening:

The two officers shot were roommates, and both were engaged to be married, one in January and one in March next year. Officer Nicholas Smarr died of his wounds. Officer Jody Smith is still in the hospital, and after surgery is now in stable condition.
