The 33 year old suspect was armed with a “machete” type knife. Garden Grove Police Lt Carl Whitney stated during a press conference that the suspect “robbed a bakery, fatally stabbed two men at an apartment, robbed a check-cashing business and an insurance business where he stabbed a woman, slashed a man at a gas station, disarmed and killed a security guard at a 7-Eleven store in Santa Ana and killed an employee at a Subway restaurant before being arrested.” (KESQ)
He also stated that the motive appeared to be robbery, anger, and hate. The suspect had no apparent connection to the victims. All four people killed were male Hispanics. The man at the gas station was so severely slashed that his nose was nearly cut off.
The two hour spree began when the suspect robbed a bakery at knifepoint. ABC reported:
“He also apparently broke into an apartment of one of his neighbors in the complex where he lives. Those residents reported a break-in just after 4 p.m. Before police could respond to take a routine burglary report, a new report came in about an hour later of a homicide at the address, police said.
That apartment complex is located in the 12000 block of Jentges Avenue. One person at the apartment was pronounced dead at the scene with stab wounds. A second person was transported with multiple stab wounds to a hospital and later succumbed to his injuries, police said.”
Two more robberies occurred a local businesses. A woman was stabbed at an insurance business, but she fought back and is expected to survive.
The suspect then went to a gas station where he slashed a man who was pumping gas. He then went to Santa Ana, less than 10 miles away, and fatally stabbed a man at the Subway restaurant. Then he went to a 7-Eleven, where he disarmed the security guard and stabbed him to death.
Undercover police officers saw his silver Mercedes in the parking lot of the convenience store and called for backup. The suspect was arrested as he exited the 7-Eleven with a knife and a gun in his hands. Police have surveillance videos of some of the crimes and are reviewing them.
