Americus, Georgia – Two Georgia Police officers were shot this afternoon. One has died, the other has been life-flighted to Macon. The suspect is identified as Minguell Kennedy Lembrick, 32. He is currently at large and an intense manhunt is underway.

The incident occurred at around 10 a.m. this morning off campus at the country Club Estates Apartments, near the south side of Griffin Bell Golf Course. Georgia Southwestern went into immediate lockdown.

Chief of Police in Americus, Scott Mark, told reporters that the Americus officer went to a domestic disturbance call, and the GSW officer came as backup. The suspect opened fire on both officers, killing one and severely wounding the other.

The Americus police officer has succumbed to his wounds. The other, a Georgia Southwestern officer, is in critical condition.

An intense manhunt is underway, and the school still requests students shelter in place. No students were harmed in the shooting, but campus officials have the lockdown remaining in place. Police advised that Lembrick should be considered armed and dangerous.

The alert reads: “Please secure all doors and windows (any additional actions such as shut down HVAC, turn off lights, move to unobservable part of the room, get on the floor, away from doors) and await further instructions or contact by first responders.”

The suspect is reportedly from Albany, Georgia. Authorities there have been alerted, but police believe he is still near the campus. He has a prior criminal record, and is wanted on warrants.
