Four Legged Heroes- K9 Officer Takes Bullet for Deputy

 In Domestic

Palm Beach County, South Florida – – Kasper, (also spelled Casper) a K9 police officer, proved that being a hero doesn’t just require two legs, when he took a bullet intended for his handler on Friday.

At around 4 a.m. on Friday, Palm County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a report of a robbery at Duggan’s Pub in West Palm Beach, Florida. The suspect, Philip Oshea, had robbed the business. When police arrived, Oshea sped away in his car.

After a short pursuit, Oshea crashed his car, got out, and began firing at officers. One officer was injured when he dove for cover, but was released from the hospital shortly thereafter. After that shootout, Oshea carjacked a woman’s vehicle and sped off again before police could set up a perimeter.

Police located Oshea in Jupiter, Florida and another gun battle ensued. Kasper was shot during that exchange of fire by inserting himself to protect his handler.

Oshea was shot and killed by police. He had an extensive criminal history and was wanted for robbery out of North Carolina. The officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave pending the investigation.

Kasper is now back home and wearing the dreaded “cone of shame,” but he is alive and doing well. He is a bomb, SWAT, and patrol dog, who once was even used to protect the President. The bullet missed vital organs, and lodged in his left hip, so surgeons were able to remove it without damage. He recovered from anesthesia well and is up and walking (albeit a little wobbly.)
