Flags Burned on Eve of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
Bakersfield, CA -Two gym owners came to work yesterday morning and found their American flags had been burned sometime between 8:30 p.m. and 04:30 a.m. on the eve of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. There was nothing left of either flag except a charred flag pole and remnants of burned nylon lying on the pavement in front of the gyms.
Neal Lyday and Dicky Mulyana both had flags flying outside of the doors of their respective gyms, which are in the same complex.
Lyday arrived at Lyday’s Fitness gym to find one of his trainers, combat veteran Michael Portell, standing over the charred pieces in shock.
“He couldn’t believe that someone could actually do that. I couldn’t believe it. It hurt me to see something like that.” Neal Lyday
Lyday wrote on Facebook,
“So on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ????????.. I got this..????.. Who ever you are you know your a scum bag. So to h*** with you .. Thank god it only burned the flag????.. And not our 2 facility’s in which would have changed the lives of many of us on how we start our day????????????????????????.. Have a great day guys and try not to let s*** like this effect you.. Your day… And others around you.. I’ll have 2 more flags up this morning..????????????????????????.. God bless America ..”
True to his word, the flags were replaced, and the vandalism was reported to Bakersfield Police. Mulyana also replaced his flag.
Both gym owners said they had no idea who did it. They didn’t believe it was a disgruntled client but would not rule it out.
Video footage of the incident may not exist. The surveillance cameras on Lyday’s property did not catch anything because crews had turned them off when he recently moved units.
Muylana, who moved to the United States from Indonesia when he was 10, said he believed the act of vandalism was part of a larger cultural shift possibly related to the presidential election.
“America is the best place. Whether you want to expect that or not, it’s got so much freedom, so much opportunity,” he said.
We have that, but there are some in America who are ungrateful for the freedoms won by the blood of our veterans. They choose to destroy the symbols of the nation in acts of stupidity.
