5 dead, two critically wounded in a shooting at LaLoche School in Northern Saskatchewan

The Calgary Herald reported,

Around 1 p.m., La Loche RCMP received a complaint about an active shooter in the community, RCMP said in a release. Officer responded to the Dene building of La Loche Community School and “immediately began searching for the suspect.” At 1:47 p.m., a male was taken into custody outside the school, at which time a firearm was seized, said police. La Loche Community School is for pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12, and houses approximately 900 students in two buildings.

Reportedly, there was a shooting at a residence in the community just prior to the shooting at the school. The community is close knit and has numerous First Nations members. The RCMP are at two crime scenes.

Parents worst nightmare

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is currently  at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland.  He released a statement:

The alleged shooter is in custody right now. The police have assured me that the situation is under control.

Obviously this is every parent’s worst nightmare. When I spoke with community leaders they obviously expressed that the community is reeling and all of us across this country, our hearts are going out to the families and to the whole community.

Canada’s gun laws are stricter than those in the United States.
