Facts and Data to Debunk the Liberal Media’s Politicizing of a Tragedy.
I’d like to first say that the tragedy that unfolded Wednesday in Parkland Florida was horrific. This was the action of a coward, a lunatic and a very mentally ill person. This is truly a sad time for our great nation. However, the blind screeching about guns and the NRA by the left and liberal media is shameful and is actually detrimental to finding a fix to this issue. Your level of emotion does not equate to your level of justification. Meaning, because you can type in all caps or scream and yell on TV, because you are VERY emotional, that does not, in turn, make your argument any more justifiable.
What does make your argument justifiable? Facts, data and statistics. Using actual data, facts and statistics to find the root of the problem is how progress will be made. So check your emotion right here, we are about to go through some things the left has claimed and then touch upon the facts, you know, using data.
This first one is this ridiculous HEADLINE:
No, no there hasn’t, and if you are a news organization that has run this headline then you are a huge part of the problem in this country. First we need to define what we consider to be a school shooting. According to Wikipedia a school shooting is, “… a form of MASS shooting attack on an educational institution, such as a school or university.” Having now defined the term we can easily look at how this is an extremely politicized and manipulative headline. Here are the acclaimed 18 school shootings as listed out by the NY daily news.
Jan. 3, St. Johns, Mich.
The first school shooting took place just three days into the new year, at East Olive Elementary School in St. Johns, Mich.

Feb. 5, Maplewood, Minn.
A third-grader pulled the trigger on a cop’s gun, firing a shot at the Harmony Learning Center. No one was injured.
Feb. 8, New York, N.Y.
A teen was taken into custody after a shot was fired inside Metropolitan High School. No one was injured.
Feb. 14, Broward County, Fla.
A former student killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Based on the definition of a school shooting laid out by wikipedia. How many of these are actually a school shooting? I’d say two, Kentucky and the latest in Florida. To be clear I am NOT saying, “oh its only 2 shootings so there’s nothing wrong here,” one school shooting is too many. What I AM saying is that the media’s blatant attempt to manipulate the population for political gain is a disgusting misuse of its influence. These media conglomerates are openly lying and manipulating the American people, and we can consider their claim hereby debunked.
Here is the next Leftist claim:
GOP is in the pocket of the NRA
This is one you will hear a lot after a tragedy like this. This idea that the NRA has bought and paid for these politicians and that is why they won’t pass gun laws that are nonsensical and over reaching. Well that is not the case. Here is a list of the top 50 campaign contributors in 2016. It lists how much money was donated by who and to what parties. This is a chart via opensecrets.org.
As you can see, the NRA is not in the top 50 of all campaign contributors. Another thing to note is that of the top 15 campaign contributors in 2016 only 3 contributed entirely to Republicans/Ronservatives, whereas 7 contributed entirely to the Democratic party. Of the remaining 5 were three organizations donating 98% to Dems and 2% to Republicans, one organization donating 99% to Dems and 1% to Republicans, and the last organization donating 57% to Dems and 43% to Republicans.
If you want to talk about money in politics, simply talk to Democrats. By the numbers, that’s where the money is.
Here is the last Leftist Claim:
Gun Control works, less guns less crime…just look at (insert country name that has gun bans)
This is where the left on occasion tries to put its emotions aside and use some numbers. The problem is they use very misleading data and facts to present a biased finding. They will say, “look more guns more gun deaths!”, but they don’t tell you that accidental deaths (which to a firearms instructor are infuriating), and suicides are baked in to this data which skews the data. Here’s a quote from left leaning NY times,
“More than 60 percent of people in this country who die from guns die by suicide.”
Here is how the left uses skewed data to manipulate the population for political gain, VOX –
“2) More guns mean more gun deaths. Period.”
The research on this is overwhelmingly clear. No matter how you look at the data, more guns mean more gun deaths.
This is apparent when you look at state-by-state data within the United States, as this chart from Mother Jones demonstrates:”
What happens when we hold this graph side by side with the suicide rates state by state?
The states with the highest suicide rates are atop the list for gun deaths. Suicide is a major problem yes, but to include suicide in these statistics is misleading because those individuals, if they don’t get the proper help, whether they have access to a gun or not are going to attempt to harm themselves. So a lot of the data the left uses is including suicide which accounts for over 60% of gun deaths.
When it comes to the left’s comparison of the US to countries with gun bans, they mislead by relating GUN crime and not over all VIOLENT CRIME. It has been proven to be the fact that VIOLENT crime remains the same before or after gun bans. The method of which the violence is perpetrated, may shift, but the violence and the crime remain. When you look at violent crime statistics, which includes firearms, you see gun control has little to no effect on the rates of crime, in fact, in many cases we see violent crimes rise. Here are some examples from CrimeResearch.org :
Britain saw a huge spike in violence after their gun ban, than it came back down to the normal ranges. How did it come back down? Easy they flooded the streets with police after the huge spike in violence. Shown in the next chart.
Here are a few more examples of violent crime rates after gun bans:
Jamaica and Ireland saw negative impacts.
DC and Chicago saw little to no impact on violent crime after gun bans.
What the charts show almost exclusively is that after gun bans there seems to be a large spike in violence initially and then a correction. Finding out what causes those corrections is the key to figuring out how to stop violence in our country. Stop blaming the tool that is used in the crime because evil always finds a way. It is clear that the removal of firearms from a society does not create a safer society. That is something we can prove with actual data that is not manipulated for a political purpose.
I do not know the solutions to this problem. What I do know is that guns haven’t changed in this country in 50 years, and we didn’t have this problem 50 years ago. So what DID change? The culture changed. We started to glorify evil in this country. We glorify gangs, drugs, rape, we glorify raw violence and sexual perversion. We glorify senseless and INSANE killers, by pasting them all over the TV and the internet where they live in infamy.
We have glorified the broken home calling the single parents heroes, instead of glorifying the sanctity of marriage. We as a nation, are condemning discipline while glorifying the disrespect of authority, teaching our youth that they never have to face the consequences of their actions. Our society has glorified the perversion of truths and lies like social justice, teaching our youth that they are entitled to an equal outcome, and when they find out it is false, the lie breeds hate and anger. We are medicating our children instead of putting in the time to actually attempt to fix them, which is a glorifying laziness.
What did we, as a society, expect to happen after glorifying evil and condemning God in this country. These are the real issues, but they are difficult, and for the most part have been created by the left so they will refuse to deal with them. So, we are left with the easy way out which is screech about the tool used to commit a heinous crime. Violence is a societal/cultural issue, the means of the violence is irrelevant. Until all of this changes we will remain the same with, or without guns in our society. If you are sick of “thoughts and prayers” and want real change. This is where to start.
