An explosion in Jaffa, which is the southern, oldest part of Tel Aviv, caused the collapse of a building. Flames shot out of the collapsed building, engulfing cars nearby. Screams of people possibly trapped could be heard, according to i24 news, but it’s unclear if anyone was trapped in the flames and rubble. At least 12 people were injured, 5 of them seriously. Other news media reported that 4 of the 5 were only “lightly wounded.”

Update: Harretz is now reporting that three people were killed in the explosion.

The explosion took place at what is reportedly a building supply store on Yefet Street at around 11:10 p.m. on Monday. Haaretz reported,

“Initial footage from the scene shows cars and buildings engulfed in flames. At least one building has partially collapsed, according to an initial police report.
According to Magen David Adom emergency responders, rescuers are searching for trapped people at the site, a hardware store on Yefet St., and three people are being treated for shock. Causes of the blast remain unknown.”

The cause is unclear at this time, whether terrorism or a gas explosion.
