El Cajon, Cali Police and the Unarmed Black Man Shot

 In Domestic

El Cajon, California is about 15 miles  northeast of San Diego. Police officers there are in a community that is 69% white. But when a black man “acting erratically” assumed a position that appeared to be a shooting stance, police shot and killed him.

Officers responded to the mall just after 2 p.m. for a subject who wasn’t “acting like himself ” and walking in traffic. Police ordered him to take his hands out of his pocket, and when he did, he had an object in them. He “assumed a shooting stance” and was killed.

The photo released by El Cajon Police was taken from a cellphone by a bystander who witnessed the altercation, and turned it in to the police at the scene.

The incident

Fox News reported,

One of the officers tried and failed to subdue the unidentified man with a stun gun before the other officer fired several times, El Cajon Police Chief Jeff Davis said at a late night news conference. Davis would not say what the object was, but acknowledged it was not a weapon.

Before police announced the death, dozens of protesters gathered at the shooting scene, with some claiming the man was shot with his hands raised. Police disputed that and produced a frame from cellphone video taken by a witness that appeared to show the man in the “shooting stance” as two officers approached with weapons drawn…

…The El Cajon protest was angry but peaceful. Several dozen people, most of them black, gathered and some cursed at officers guarding the scene. They chanted “black lives matter!” and “hands up, don’t shoot!”

Protests were immediate

Note: “BEFORE police announced the death protesters gathered.…”

The El Cajon Police asked the community to remain calm as the investigation progressed.

“This will be transparent. This will be looked at by multiple sets of eyes, not just ours.”  El Cajon Police Chief Jeff Davis

The man’s sister claims he was mentally ill. The protesters claimed he had his hands up. Police have not yet released the cell phone video, just the still photo.

“I just called for help, and you came and killed him.” Suspect’s sister
