Dirty Bombs and Poisoned Chili Pots – ISIS Marches On

UPDATE: The missing radioactive material was found on Sunday about 9 miles from Basra. It had been dumped at a gas station in Zubair. Officials say it was “100% intact” and there was no danger of leakage.

Original story

Iraq is on the hunt for “highly dangerous” radioactive material  that was stored in a case the size of a laptop in Basra. Officials are concerned that if ISIS gets its hands on it, they could create a dirty bomb. Adding to that, ISIS in Indonesia  is said to be planning to use Cyanide to poison food.

Dirty Bomb?

The radioactive material actually went missing in November. A document obtained by Reuters stated that it was Ir-192, a substance used for industrial gamma radiography in the oil industry’s testing of pipes for flaws, as well as cancer treatment.

The material was held at a facility owned by Houston-based Weatherford, and the material itself was owned by SGS Turkey. Neither commented to Reuters when asked about the situation.

Reuters wrote,

The document, dated Nov. 30 and addressed to the ministry’s Centre for Prevention of Radiation, describes “the theft of a highly dangerous radioactive source of Ir-192 with highly radioactive activity belonging to SGS from a depot belonging to Weatherford in the Rafidhia area of Basra province”.

A senior environment ministry official based in Basra, who declined to be named as he is not authorized to speak publicly, told Reuters the device contained up to 10 grams (0.35 ounces) of Ir-192 “capsules”, a radioactive isotope of iridium also used to treat cancer.

The material is classed as a Category 2 radioactive source by the International Atomic Energy Agency, meaning if not managed properly it could cause permanent injury to a person in close proximity to it for minutes or hours, and could be fatal to someone exposed for a period of hours to days.

At this point, there is no hard evidence that ISIS has obtained the material. Officials have no suspects, but there were no forced locks, or smashed doors where it was being kept.

Iraqi officials are working “day and night” to find the missing case. In the meantime, in Indonesia, the plan to poison food sources with cyanide has been revealed.

The ISIS plan to poison chili pots in Indonesia

Poisoning the chili pots

The Express UK reported,

Indonesia is on high alert after a senior government official revealed the terror group was planning to put the highly toxic substance in jars of chilli.

Luhut Pandjaitan, minister for political, legal and security affairs, said: “ISIS is now using cyanide to terrorise. They are using cyanide to poison food.

“We have considered various forms of threats and we are prepared to face such a possibility [of cyanide poisoning].”

Cyanide can be used to poison water supplies as well as food. Chili is especially susceptible, because its spicy flavor would easily mask the substance.

Chemical weapons, anything they can use to kill

ISIS reportedly used chemical weapons (mustard gas) on Kurds in August, so none of this is out of the norm for them. They are killers and will do anything they can to destroy lives.

Personally, though, I’d skip eating Indonesian chili for a while.
