Deportations Delayed For 2 Weeks so Congress Can Get Its Act Together.
Deportations delayed: President Trump tweeted today that the deportations promised for Sunday are delayed for two weeks in an effort to make the Democrats move off square one and fix the loopholes in our immigration system. Likely they won’t.
At the request of Democrats, I have delayed the Illegal Immigration Removal Process (Deportation) for two weeks to see if the Democrats and Republicans can get together and work out a solution to the Asylum and Loophole problems at the Southern Border. If not, Deportations start!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 22, 2019
The people that Ice will apprehend have already been ordered to be deported. This means that they have run from the law and run from the courts. These are people that are supposed to go back to their home country. They broke the law by coming into the country, & now by staying.— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 22, 2019
Panic ensued when word leaked that ICE was going to raid illegals in 10 major cities on Sunday. Who leaked that information is unknown, but former acting director of ICE, Tom Homan lambasted DHS Acting Secretary Kevin McAleenan of working against ICE by leaking the raids to the press.
“You’ve got the acting Secretary of Homeland Security resisting what ICE is trying to do. In the Washington Post story, and numerous media outlets, [McAleenan] does not support this operation. And I tell you what, if that’s his position then he’s on the wrong side of this issue. You don’t tell the men and women of ICE a day before they go out there to do this operation…When this story was leaked, they gave the location of the cities, the day this was supposed to start, how many targets. This leak, which I know where the leak came from, I think we all know where the leak came from. That story only benefits one person. Put these officers at greater risk of harm. I know the president said we’re going to do an operation, one million people in a week. He didn’t give the location. He didn’t give the number of targets.” Tom HomanLawandCrime
In actual fact, the only people who were being deported in the raids already have deportation orders against them. ICE was not planning to going door to door asking everyone about their status. They have paperwork and they were going to use it to pick up those who had already been adjudicated. Of course, Democrats had a heart attack and demanded that the President stop the action.
So he delayed it for just two weeks…which places that action on the table after the July 1-4th recess. They’ll either have to get something worked out before then (highly unlikely), or immediately when they return (also unlikely).
