Denmark Honors US Marines and Army Captain

On April 13, Denmark presented five US Marines with a prestigious Danish medal for Exceptional Meritorious Service in the fight against ISIS. On April 20, a US Army Captain was also honored with a Danish Defense Medal after intelligence he developed thwarted a plot to attack a Danish school.

The Danish embassy did not provide details of exactly what the Marines did to receive the honors.

According to the Marine Corps Times,

Four Marine majors — Michael Radynsky, Justin Jones, Richard Schellhass and Scott Benninghoff — received the Defense Medal for Exceptionally Meritorious International Service. Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jake Geary received the Defense Medal for Exceptionally Meritorious Service.

The Marines were honored April 13; Gen. Peter Bartram, Denmark’s chief of defense, presented the awards.

Foreign awards

Though the Marine Corps Times stated that it’s rare for a foreign government to honor a US service member singularly, it has happened.

When Americans thwarted a terrorist attack on a French commuter train, they were honored by the French government with their highest honor- the Legion of Honor.

Vietnam, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, all gave awards to US service personnel. Many nations only have awards for saving a life, or conduct that displays gallantry/valor in combat.

Most common are citations given to entire units for a military campaign.

Army Captain Bradley Grimm

Captain Grimm developed a method of gathering intelligence that Col Steve Warren said “exploited captured documents on enemy foreign fighters who were from Denmark or who had relatives in Denmark, as well as some cyber information on possible terrorist threats to Denmark.”

His information thwarted an attack on a Denmark school.
