Democrats Former IT Staffer Tries to Flee the Country While Under Investigation

 In opinion, Politics

Imran Awan, one of the House Democrats’ former IT staffer, who has been under investigation since February, attempted to flee the United States after FBI investigators found smashed hard drives in his home.

Florida Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz still had him on her payroll long after everyone else fired them (but her spokesperson says he was only a consultant). Her office says he has now been fired.

Imran Awan was arrested on Monday night at Dulles International Airport on bank fraud charges as he was attempting to leave the country. Originally a Capitol Police Investigation, the FBI is now involved.

Awan and other members family were also hired by Democrats, and have been under investigation for stealing data and equipment by the Capitol Police. They were barred from access to the House computer system when the news broke in February that they had not only overcharged the House of Representatives, but may have exposed sensitive information.

Fox News reported,

Awan, 37, of Virginia, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to one count of bank fraud during his arraignment in federal court in Washington, D.C. He was released but will have to wear a GPS monitor and abide by a curfew.

Awan also was ordered to turn over all his passports. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 21.

Law enforcement authorities for months have been looking into how Awan may have double-billed the House for equipment like computers, iPads, monitors, keyboards and routers. Several relatives of Awan worked for House Democrats and were fired months ago. Awan, however, was kept on staff by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., even though he was no longer allowed access to the House server network.

The criminal complaint and affidavit said he had bought a ticket to fly Monday to Doha, Qatar, and then Lahore, Pakistan, with a return flight booked for early January. The affidavit specifically alleged he engaged in a scheme to defraud a Congressional Federal Credit Union.

The Daily Caller reported this week,

FBI agents seized smashed computer hard drives from the home of Florida Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s information technology (IT) administrator, according to two sources with knowledge of the investigation.

Pakistani-born Imran Awan, long-time right-hand IT aide to the former Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairwoman, has since desperately tried to get the hard drives back, an individual whom FBI investigators interviewed in the case told The Daily Caller News Foundation’s Investigative Group.

Meanwhile, Debbie Wasserman Schultz has reportedly agreed to allow the FBI to scan her laptop, after being vehemently opposed to it.
