Democrat Proposes ‘Cash For Guns’ Program

Connecticut House of Representatives member Rosa DeLauro (D, CT) plans to introduce a bill offering tax credits in exchange for turning in an ‘assault weapon’ to the police.

 cash for guns

Rosa DeLauro, a democratic state representative in Connecticut wants to offer a tax credit for “assault rifles.”

“Cash For Guns” = Tax Credit

At a press conference DeLauro said,

“Assault weapons are not about hunting, or even self-defense. There is no reason on earth, other than to kill as many people as possible in as short a time as possible, that anyone needs a gun designed for a battlefield.”

DeLauro’s SAFER legislation would provide up to $2,000 in taxpayer-funded tax credits for gun owners who turn their semi-automatic rifles into the government, via their local police station.

AR-15- Ignorance of the left

Never before has a rifle been so misunderstood. Perhaps it all stems from an unfortunate name. This will come as a surprise to the gun hating leftists but, ‘AR’ does NOT mean Assault Rifle.

What today we call the M-16/M-4 military battle rifle, was originally developed by a small weapons manufacturer named ArmaLite, Inc. The dreaded ‘AR’ of AR-15 stands for ArmaLite Rifle.

Originally a division of Fairchild Aircraft, ArmaLite has produced the AR-5 & AR-7 – both small caliber survival rifles, the AR-10 – designed as a replacement for the M-14 battle rifle, and the now leftist gun hating blood boiling AR-15.

You don’t have to be a detective to see the flaws in DeLauro’s SAFER Act. First, the AR-15 is NOT an assault rifle. I’m not sure exactly what constitutes an ‘assault rifle’, but more importantly neither does DeLauro. The semi-automatic operation of the AR-15 is similar to dozens if not 100s of other rifles on the market today.

Secondly, DeLauro’s ignorance of the AR-15, and I suspect ALL guns, is clear. For small to medium game, the AR-15 IS a pretty good hunting rifle.   For large game, deer, elk, bear, etc, I’d choose a much heavier round than the 5.56mm/.223 caliber of the AR-15.

Third, sorry Ms. DeLauro, the AR-15 IS a pretty good home defense weapon. A proven design, with a 30 round magazine is a pretty good deterrent as compared to the 2 shots of Vice President Biden’s double barrel shot gun alternative.

Cash For Clunkers Lesson

The rule of unintended consequences applies whenever government tries to influence market forces. It is not coincidence the AR-15 is the most popular rifle in America. The dreaded AR-15 is reliable, fires inexpensive ammunition, light weight and reasonably priced.

The AR-15 can be modified to fit the shooter with a variety of stocks, hand guards, optics, and other options. Today, an optics ready AR-15 can be purchased new for under $700.00. And THAT”S why I love this idea. Remember, DeLauro is NOT proposing a tax deduction, but a tax credit. That mean a big fat check for my rifle.

As an owner of several AR-15 rifles, I’d gladly ‘turn in’ one of my older ARs for a $2000.00 tax credit. I could purchase another with half the money, pocketing the rest. That’s what I call ‘Win-Win’.

Guns Aren’t The Problem

Ms. DeLauro continues to display her ignorance saying,

“These weapons were used in Newtown, Aurora and countless other mass shootings across America. And they have been disproportionately used to kill law enforcement officers in the line of duty. They have no place on the streets or in our homes.”

When will the gun hating left learn that guns are not the problem. It’s a cliché, but ‘Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.’ Responsible gun owners are law abiding citizens. Irresponsible gun owners set on doing harm can commit crimes and injure people using a 6 shot revolver or a modern AR-15 rifle. The ‘gun’ is NOT the problem.

Even so, if the Feds want to over pay for my rifle, I’ll take the money.  Even though there’s no clear funding source for DeLauro’s SAFER Act, typical of Democrat sponsored legislation, I love this idea. I’m a tax paying, law abiding gun owning citizen, so ‘Yeah, I’ll take the money.’

For $2000.00, count me in Ms. DeLauro. I’ll be first in line.
