Deerfield, Illinois Bans all Semi-Automatic Weapons
A new ordinance in Deerfield, Illinois bans the possession, sale, and manufacturing of all semi-automatic weapons within the community (yes they call them “assault weapons.” It includes rifles, handguns, and shotguns. Offenders who do not remove the weapons by June 13 will be fined from $250-$1000 PER DAY until the weapons are removed.
The village of Deerfield passed an ordinance in 2013 against the weapons, but had a caveat in it that allowed safe storage. The option allowed the city to amend the ordinance in the future – which it has done. Now they are banned completely because the “village trustees” feel that it will make the community “safer.”
Law enforcement and retired law enforcement are exempted from the ordinance.
The village of Deerfield has modeled their ordinance along the same lines as one in Highland Park, which they say survived a legal challenge at the Supreme Court. It survived because the Supreme Court at the time refused to take up the appeal and allowed the ruling at the 7th Circuit Court of appeals to stand. You can read the entire ordinance here.
They have defined “assault weapon” to include all semi-automatic weapons except antique handguns or weapons that have been made inoperable. They also exempted guns designed for shooting at Olympic events.
Legal gun owners in the village are extremely unhappy.
“There were a lot of emotional arguments and not a lot based on fact. Deerfield is a very crime free community, and I don’t see how this is going to make it any more crime free.” Daniel Easterday [The population of this small burg is only around 19,000.]
“First it’s going to be assault rifles. (There will be) new bans in the future. It’s just a matter of time.” Larry Nordal
“There’s an ancient and honored American tradition called disobeying an unjust law. I have urged (people) to listen to their conscience and if so moved do not obey this law.” Joel Siegel
The Village trustees received legal assistance from “gun violence prevention” organizations, according to one trustee. They were reportedly impressed with the children who marched against gun violence. Some who did not agree with the ordinance “chose not to come because they would be subjected to ridicule” in the community.
The Illinois Rifle Association plans to file a lawsuit.
Here is the bottom line, America: Don’t be a coward. Your rights are being infringed in a massive way because of CHILDREN who know nothing whatsoever of history and are backed by powerful left wing organizations and their money. They are the pawns in this fight. And it IS a fight.
