Congressional Gun Control Push After Las Vegas

 In 2nd Amendment, opinion

The major hysteria over guns from the horrific massacre in Las Vegas has infected both sides in Congress. But like grabbing a new relationship just after a divorce is foolish, deciding on more gun control after a shooting is extremely unwise. The Congressional gun control push has now become a hysteria-driven effort …which guarantees poorly worded legislation that could eventually be expanded by Democrats.

H.R. 3999

Rep Carlos Curbelo, (R-FL) introduced H.R. 3999 to the House on 10-10-2017. The stated purpose of the bill, which has 25 cosponsors (so far) that cross both party lines, is this:

“To amend title 18, United States Code, to prohibit the manufacture, possession, or transfer of any part or combination of parts that is designed and functions to increase the rate of fire of a semiautomatic rifle but does not convert the semiautomatic rifle into a machinegun, and for other purposes.”

As of October 12, there was no text submitted, and they were working on a summary. It was introduced on the floor of the House on October 10, and referred to the Judiciary Committee. According to the government website that tracks such things, the only time a bill has no text yet, is if there are too many bills for the printing office to finish, or the bill is excessively long.

Flash back

Though House Speaker Paul Ryan said that the quickest way to resolve the bump stock problem would be for the ATF to regulate it. The ATF says they ‘can’t’ do that because a bump stock is an “accessory” not a weapon itself.

“Never mind that of the modern mass shootings in America, only one killer used a machine gun: Stephen Paddock. And where was this “common sense” when President Barack Obama’s ATF approved the bump stock, pronouncing it a part, not a weapon?” Author, Radio Host Larry Elder

Gee, ‘parts’ have never stopped them before.

In 2014, the ATF raided Ares Armor over their 80% lowers in spite of a restraining order against them to prevent them from obtaining their customer lists. The lowers are only partially completed, which means that they are not technically considered a firearm. The ATF took most of  the Ares Armor inventory and even their customer lists. The judge that granted Ares restraining order “changed her mind.” Sure ok.  Believe that? Neither do we.

Democrats and Legislative “Mission Creep”

Liberals have been screaming for Congress to “do something” since the Las Vegas shooting. But look at the stated purpose of this legislation:

“To amend title 18, United States Code, to prohibit the manufacture, possession, or transfer of any part or combination of parts that is designed and functions to increase the rate of fire of a semiautomatic rifle but does not convert the semiautomatic rifle into a machinegun, and for other purposes.”

That statement does not appear to have a grandfather clause for law abiding people who have the items. Is this bill even enforceable? What does “and for other purposes” mean?

Neither a bump stock nor a trigger crank actually convert a semiautomatic rifle into a fully automatic one, but they are able to increase the rate of fire. Senators like Dianne Feinstein have something more in mind that just a bump stock, however: she wants a full on ban of “assault weapons,” according to Breitbart.

Senator Chris Murphy openly stated that he was in favor of universal background checks, which could lead to a national gun registry. He’s hoping that after the background checks legislation, they would be able to get a full on ban on “assault weapons.” Background checks would NOT have prevented the Law Vegas Massacre, since Paddock bought all the guns legally and had no prior criminal record.

Democrats are also looking for bans on “high capacity magazines.” They are vehemently opposed to the National Reciprocity bill, claiming it would make Americans concerned for their safety. Feinstein doesn’t even believe that concealed carry is covered by the Constitution. And don’t forget how much Hillary gushed over the Australian gun laws…and the Washington Post and other left wing media as well.

California has some of the most stringent gun regulations in the entire United States – and still the mass shooting occurred. The San Bernardino, Sandy Hook, and Virginia Tech shootings all took place in “gun free zones.” Democrats and some liberal Republicans are literally salivating over the hopes of more stringent gun control.

“Regulating or banning anything has never worked and never will. Law abiding citizens follow the law and it is always the law abiding citizens that end up being punished for what criminals do.” Rick Ferran, Uncle Sam’s Misguided Children
