Child from Mall of America Attack Regains Consciousness

Miracles are all around us, but often they happen in the midst of tragedy. Such is the case of Landen Hoffman, 5. He was thrown off a third floor balcony at the Mall of America and crashed 39 feet (conflicting reports put the distance at 120 feet) below onto the cement on April 12. By all normal standards, he should not have survived. But he not only has survived, he is now out of critical condition and conscious, according to Fox9.

On April 12, Emmanuel Aranda, 24, (who had been banned from the mall, by the way) approached Landen’s mother in a fit of rage, picked up her son and threw him over the edge of the balcony onto the floor. Then he fled. Witnesses below heard the “sickening thud” and found the little boy lying motionless in a pool of blood, according to the Metro UK.

“Everyone pray, everyone pray. Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge.” Landen’s Mother

Police started CPR and rushed him to the hospital. There he was unconscious until the family gave a statement on April 26 that read in part,

“All praise and glory and honor to Jesus. He saved our son’s life and is healing him in the most miraculous ways…
We are now turning our focus to additional surgeries, healing, rehabilitation and eventually a return home, which we hope will happen by June. We want to thank each and every one of you for your love, prayers and support.”
Stephen Tillitt, family representative

“It’s like he fell off a bicycle instead of being thrown off a balcony”

The family belongs to Living Word Christian Center. They view this incident as a miracle, and well they should. The pastor told his congregation that after a five hour MRI, doctors were amazed to find that Landen had no brain injuries, only minor internal ones, and did not appear to have anything but broken bones that will require surgery. He face required reconstruction, but doctors said it “went back together” as they worked on him. He is facing multiple surgeries for the bones, but family is hoping he will be able to go home by June.

Aranda is being held on a $2 Million bond. His excuse for the attack? Women had “rejected him.” He planned to go to the mall and kill an adult, but chose the child instead. He was arrested on a train after shoving a witness who tried to stop him out of the way. He was charged with First Degree Attempted Premeditated Murder. His next appearance is May 14.

The GoFundMe set up for the parents has raised over $1 million.
