The jury has sentenced  Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death for counts 4, 5, 9, 10, 14, 15 in the penalty phase of the Boston Bombing case. Though some on the jury did not agree on mitigating factors, they reached a unanimous verdict on several of the capital accounts.

The jury only had to reach unanimous verdict on one count of a death penalty charge. They managed to do so for at least six counts. Some of the jurors were reportedly crying as the verdicts were read, but Tsarnaev sat impassively, according to courtroom reporters.

Some of the reading of the counts and the mitigating circumstances by live tweets from WBUR:

The judge thanked the jury for their service and advised that their names would now be released to the public. He let them know that the  media would be asking  questions, which they were free to answer. But he did admonish them that no attorney was allowed to speak with them without the judge’s permission.

What happens now?

In two months, a sentencing hearing will be held in which victims and the defense will be allowed to speak. The judge is bound by law to adhere to the jury’s verdict today. A mandatory appeal must be made to any death penalty verdict, which could take  a year or two.

The verdict provided only a small amount of closure for the many victims of the Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013. The loss of limbs, the deaths of loved ones, the sights and sounds of a massive attack…all lives forever changed by two terrorists who could care less about the people they targeted. The communities of Massachusetts apart from the Marathon lived through shootouts, and martial-law-like status as law enforcement hunted the ones responsible for the bombing.
