Blizzard 2016 – When the going gets tough…

The massive snow dump on the East Coast has DC shut down, thousands of people without power up and down the coastline, travelers stranded on the turnpike, and skiers in Times Square. The weather forecast for New York caused Gov Cuomo to institute a full travel ban beginning at 2:30 p.m. with metro service shut down at 4.

Friends in Virginia stated that at 06:00 a.m. they had 20 inches of snow and counting.

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” Joseph P. Kennedy

There is one place where the blizzard has yet to affect the operation of things: at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

The U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Regiment still on duty

“I will guard everything within the limits of my post and quit my post only when properly relieved.” The Old Guard

The soldiers guarding the tomb today have not left, nor have they stopped their duties. In the midst of a blinding snowstorm that has literally ground DC to a halt, they are still at their post. It’s cold, wet, and totally miserable, but they have not budged.

There is an inclement weather “box” where they can go if the weather becomes impossible. But most of the soldiers refuse that and stay at their post.

In New Jersey, Governor Christie told reporters that mass transit should be ready Monday, and about 90,000 customers were without power.

Charlotte, North Carolina had about 100,000 customers without power at last count.

Traffic on the Pennsylvania Turnpike stranded motorists for over 16 hours with no food.

There were those who seem to be enjoying the snow, and taking it all in stride. There will always be whiners, I guess. When the West is inundated by snow, no one even blinks- perhaps because we are far less populated. But one thing I do know, Mother Nature is most certainly not racist, even though the snow is white.
