Arrest Made in Omaha Church Attack (video)
Omaha, Nebraska – Police have arrested a 22 year old male in connection with an Omaha church attack. The incident involved a purse-snatching and assault on a 76 year old woman at St. Cecilia Cathedral on Sunday.
The robbery and assault was captured on the church’s video surveillance system. St. Cecelia’s staff posted the video on line, where it was quickly shared.
The victim was seen walking into the church and standing in front of the welcome table to read the church newsletter at around 11:06 a.m. As she began to read it, two black males entered the church. One snatched her purse, and the other- for no reason- struck her in the face, causing her to fall and crack her head on the side of table.
Rev. James Netusil was in the sacristy preparing for the morning’s service when an usher ran in and told him what happened, as well as asking for a towel to wipe the blood from her face.
“Honestly, I saw the video for the first time this morning [Tuesday], and it just makes you cringe. After the first kid grabbed her purse, the second one hits her, and there’s no point to it. It was just evil.” Rev Netusil
At first she did not want to go to the hospital, but church staff convinced her to go. The elderly woman was treated at the emergency room at Creighton University Medical Center for a bump and scrapes on her forehead.
She is said to be doing fine. Her response was that she just wanted people to pray for the assailants.
Members of the Omaha gang unit thought they recognized the suspect, and had an arrest warrant issued.
Wayman B. Clark was taken into custody just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Police had also received several tips from the public on who the suspect might be. The other suspect is still at large.
