Amsterdam Stabbing Attack – “Terrorist Motive”

On Friday, two tourists were wounded in a stabbing attack at the Central train station in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Both victims were Americans. The suspect is an Afghan national. Police are probing a possible “terrorist motive.”

“The suspect is at a hospital under police guard and is being questioned about his motive for the stabbing incident. A terrorist motive is being considered…The preliminary investigation by the police shows that the victims were not specifically chosen or with a clear reason…There is close contact with the German authorities about the background of this suspect.” Amsterdam city statement

The incident occurred at around 12 p.m. local time on Friday. Authorities stated that the man appeared to have chosen his victims at random. The 19 year old Afghan national “Jawad S” is recovering in the hospital after being shot by police.

The Americans are recovering from stab wounds that were said to be “non-life-threatening” but serious. Their identities were not released.

The suspect has legal status in neighboring Germany. Authorities have collected data storage devices from his home in Germany, and will be evaluating the contents.

“First statements made by the suspect indicate he had a terrorist motive.” The Amsterdam city council noted after the suspect was questioned Saturday in the hospital.

A dramatic photo captured by a passerby shows two police officers pointing their pistols at a man wearing jeans and sneakers lying on the ground inside a tunnel in the station.

Ambassador Pete Hoekstra issued a written statement saying embassy officials had been in touch with the victims or their families. Police say they have serious but not life-threatening injuries. Authorities did not disclose the identities of the victims.

“We wish them a speedy recovery and are working closely with the City of Amsterdam to provide assistance to them and their families,” Hoekstra said.

The suspect is reportedly being held in solitary confinement pending his hearing on Monday to decide whether he will be released from custody or held until trial according to Reuters.
