Alief, Texas – Father Shoots Home Invader near Teen Daughter’s Bedroom
On Sunday night, a suspect in his early 30’s broke into a home in Alief, a suburb of Houston, Texas. He was armed with a gun. The homeowner found him just outside his daughter’s upstairs bedroom and wrested the gun away, shooting him multiple times. The suspect then stabbed himself to death with a kitchen knife.
Police were called to the home in Alief for a report of a shooting at around 2:40 a.m.. The suspect, believed to be between 30 and 35, had broken into the home through a ground floor window that faced the street.
The father found the suspect near his 13 year old daughter’s bedroom. The father struggled with the suspect, wrested the gun out of the suspect’s hand, and shot him multiple times, according to the Houston Chronicle.
A neighbor who heard the shooting reportedly ushered the four children who were in the house outside. By the time she returned, she saw the suspect stabbing himself with a kitchen knife. He was transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“The homeowner ended up getting the weapon, where he ultimately discharged that weapon striking the suspect multiple times. The suspect was then transported to the hospital, where he was ultimately pronounced deceased. After the shooting had happened upstairs, a neighbor had come over to the residence. They were able to get all of the kids out of the house. When they went back over to the house, they did observe the suspect downstairs in the residence stabbing himself.” Houston Detective Blake Roberts to Fox 26
Police believe it may have been a random invasion, but the incident is still under investigation. No charges are expected against the homeowner. Texas has a strong self-defense law that specifically says deadly force may be used against intruders in self defense situations.
“Of course, it’s still under investigation — we still have a lot of research to do on the male that broke into the house as far as his criminal history, his mental history and anything we can find in order to determine what would be the motive for this.” Detective Blake Roberts
None of the four children were injured.
