2,300 American Humvees, 2,300 Vehicle Borne IEDs
A VBIED is a Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device. ISIS, Al-Qaeda, all of the jihadist factions are experts at creating them. They fill up the vehicle with explosives and then drive it to their destination and BOOM! People die. Sometimes a lot of people die, sometimes a few.
Yahoo News reports that approximately 2/3 of the armored military vehicles sent to Iraq have landed in the hands of ISIS. And they are making use of them – as car bombs for suicide attacks.
At least 45 Iraqi police officers were killed and 33 wounded on June 1, when three vehicles were packed with explosives and rammed into a military base at Tharthar in Anbar Province. It is only one of many such attacks over the last year, thanks to Iraqis abandoning the vehicles to ISIS.

“There’s a simple reason the militants are using Humvees and other armored vehicles as rolling bombs.Their protective armored plating prevents defenders from killing the trucks’ drivers before the militants can detonate their loads, while the vehicles’ capacity to carry enormous amounts of weight means the Islamic State can sometimes pack in a ton of explosives.” Sean D. Naylor, Foreign Policy
“There is little defense against a multiton car bomb; there is none against multiple such car bombs … the Islamic State is able to overwhelm once-thought-formidable static defenses through a calculated and concentrated use of suicide bombers. The Islamic State has neither a shortage of such explosives nor a shortage of volunteers eager to partake in suicide attacks.” The Soufan Group
The VBIED strategy works very well for ISIS. And since they have lots of vehicles to work with, that scenario is not likely to stop any time soon.
So smart of ISIS to use captured vehicles as VBIEDs. US can easily identify them from air. They lose ammo to CAS, but not people.
